Session Beer Alert: Bell's Oarsman
By willon Nov 23, 09Recently tapped at Hackney's, the Bell's Oarsman is a session beer created using old German brewing techniques. Session beers are a rare breed these days and it is nice to see a flavorful low alcohol beer. This is the description from Bell's: "Designed as a flavorful session beer, Oarsman Ale uses a classic German brewing technique to impart a light, refreshing tartness. Oarsman Ale grew out of a desire to explore the tradition of session beers, trading intensity for finesse while still creating a worthwhile experience for the taster. The grain bill includes a healthy portion of wheat, while German hops lend herbal notes to the aroma. Fermented with Bell’s house ale yeast, Oarsman comes in at 4.0% alcohol by volume. Rather than being the dominant flavor note, the tartness in Oarsman takes on more of a palate-cleansing role, making it perfect for pairing with food." -

Growlers In Chicago
By willon Feb 01, 10There has been a fair amount of buzz surrounding the popularity of growlers lately as a result of the New York Times article The New Old Way To Tote Your Beer. As die hard proponents of American craft beer, we at BeerMenus find growlers to be one of the best ways to enjoy beer. I wrote a brief history of the growler back in May '09 putting growlers in context a bit. We have since been cited in a Christian Action League article in North Carolina, which claims growlers make underage drinking easier. I'm not even going to touch that one. Nonetheless, we at BeerMenus love us some growlers and want to help people find them as best as we can. We have a list of places that sell growlers in Chicago to get you started. If we are missing any, please let us know via email or in comments below. -

Beer to Drink with Mexican Food
By willon Mar 09, 10Rick Bayless, of Xoco, Frontera Grill, and Topolobampo, is collaborating with Greg Hall to create a beer meant to be paired with Mexican cuisine. "The goal is to make something that pairs with guacamole, ceviche and other starters." According to Hall, "It will have a lot of citrus -- an unusual citrus -- and be very bright with a forward spice character, but not heat spice." This beer is expected to be available this Summer, so stay tuned for this beer to appear in the New Beers section here on BeerMenus Chicago. Read more. -

Chicago Area World Beer Cup Winners
By willon Apr 12, 10On April 6th and 7th, beers from around the World were judged as a part of the World Beer Cup, which took place in Chicago during the Craft Brewers Conference. According to the organizers of the World Beer Cup, "As consumer choices expand, the availability of information becomes more important. With this in mind, the Brewers Association developed the World Beer Cup® International Competition in 1996 to celebrate the art and science of brewing by recognizing outstanding achievement. This global competition ultimately creates greater consumer awareness about different beer styles and flavor profiles while promoting international brewing excellence. Every two years, a highly qualified professional panel of beer judges honors the top three beers in nearly 91 categories with gold, silver, and bronze awards. The World Beer Cup, often referred to as 'The Olympics of Beer Competitions,' is the most prestigious beer competition in the world."
Local winners:
Fruit beer or Field beer: Goose Island Lolita (Silver medal)

Chicago Beer Week Starts Today
By willon May 17, 10Starting today Chicago will be celebrating its own inaugural beer week. From the organizers: "Chicago Craft Beer Week is part of the nationwide celebration of American Craft Beer Week, but we will be pulling out the stops to put a decidedly 'Windy City Spin' on this event-filled week. Our organizational team from the ICBG is working with breweries, beer distributors, restaurants, bars and beer retailers to coordinate events that showcase our thriving Midwest Beer Culture." A special thanks to the organizers from the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild for making this happen. Check out the full schedule of events here. -
New Wave Beer Bar: Tribes Ale House
By willon May 19, 10We'd like to give a big shout-out and thank you to our first sponsor in Chicago Tribes Ale House. These guys bring a welcome enthusiasm to the craft beer scene in Chicago organizing creative and fun events designed to educate people about beer and they of course put tremendous thought into their rotating selection of over 40 taps.
Their next big event on July 17th The Brawl To Settle It All is a seven round tasting event where number one ranked brewery on Ratebeer Three Floyds goes head-to-head against number one ranked brewery on BeerAdvocate Stone Brewing to determine the best brewery in the Country. Patrons get to vote on which beers they prefer from each brewery and the winner is crowned.
One thing they offer which I personally love is flights, which allow you to have a selection of samples of many beers so you can try as many new beers as possible without seriously damaging your liver. Have a look at their beer menu before heading over to see exactly what they have on tap (they update their menu almost daily) and you will likely find a great new beer you've never had before.
Check out this recent post from the Brewstravelers that provides a good description of a night at Tribes.
As they say
