Yesterday on ABC News Austin Wilson, founder of Draft Mag, did a segment on pairing beer with wings for the Super Bowl. You can see the video here. In the segment, Wilson pairs traditional buffalo hot wings with the Stone IPA. He pairs honey barbque wings with Rogue Hazelnut and Samuel Smith Nut Brown. Wilson pairs blue cheese with the Meantime London Porter and the Fullers London Porter. Finally, he pairs bourbon chicken wings with the Petrus Aged Pale.
In the segment, he says “often times you can’t find the specific beer you are looking for.” That is where BeerMenus comes in. Click on the beers above to find them and starting drinking better beer at your super bowl party!

A growler is a half gallon (64 oz) glass bottle that you can get filled up with draft beer at various bars and beer stores. These places will put draft beer from a keg into a growler so you can drink draft beer at home. Growlers provide fresh beer that hasn’t been sitting on shelves past its prime the way bottled beer often does. Growlers also allow you to get beer from local breweries that do not bottle, like Chelsea Brewing Company, Sixpoint Craft Ales, and Captain Lawrence Brewing Company. Growlers also create less waste; bring back your growler to get refilled the next time and you won’t have to deal with all of those bottles and cans.
Check out the places in NYC that fill growlers and buy a couple for your Super Bowl party tomorrow.

This Wednesday Rattle ‘N’ Hum will be having a cask ale event with four different vintages of the Harviestoun Ola Dubh, a beer brewed in Alva, Scotland. The Ola Dubh is aged in Highland Park whisky barrels and is full of flavor. According to the brewery, this beer retains the appearance of “motor oil, from which the beer gets its name, it is deep dark brown, dense and oily. On the nose there are notes of truffle oil and cocoa as well as faint smoke and heathery peat from from the whisky casks. Although lighter in body than its appearance suggests, Ola Dubh is pithy, oily, salty, and bitter on the palate. The finish is exceptional; burnt and bitter notes with interplay of late hop characters, orange oil, fruity tartness and then delicate, fragrant smoke.” Sip one of these over some good conversation and order some stinky cheese that will stand up to this assertive brew.
The lineup:
Harviestoun Ola Dubh 12-Year, 40L Firkin –
Harviestoun Ola Dubh 18-Year, 40L Firkin –
Harviestoun Ola Dubh 30-Year, 40L Firkin –

Hitting the streets for Inauguration Day is Ommegang’s Obamagang, a cross “between a porter and stout, with a bit of Kriek and a touch of chocolate blended in.” According to Ommegang, “We will donate a percentage of sales to charities in the respective cities where the beer is sold, and we’ve asked our distributors to match our donations and pick the local charities.” This beer will only be available in a hand full of cities. View the bars serving Obamagang in NYC.

The Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) is a group that promotes beer literacy and certifies beer judges through an examination. To prepare people for the exam, the BJCP put together a comprehensive study guide that outlines traditional beer styles. You can also download their free iPhone app, which is a very handy reference tool when you are at a beer bar and want to know what makes that pilsner different from that kolsch.

We at beermenus have enjoyed several new arrivals that have graced the “New Beers” section of the homepage this Winter. The Southern Tier Choklat is the chocolate stout with the most chocolate masking the most alcohol. The Ithaca Ten is Ithaca Brewing Company’s Anniversary ale exploding with hops and balanced with “too many malts.” Finally, the Troegs Mad Elf is a strong belgian ale brewed with cherries, honey, and chocolate malt that we can’t get enough of.
What are your favorite beers released this Winter? You can chime in and hear what others think in the new beers section of Forums.
